Saxifraga 'floral carpet' seeds - produce low evergreen mats topped with masses of bright pink and white spring flowers, ideal for containers, rockeries and raised beds. Sow on the surface of pre-watered seed compost in pots or trays, keep at about 20°c in shade for 2–4 weeks for germination, then move to cooler, brighter conditions. If germination is poor, cold-stratify at 4°c for 4 weeks before returning to warmth. Transplant seedlings when large enough and grow on in a sheltered spot before planting out in full sun or part shade in well-drained soil. Remove faded flowers to prolong bloom and add grit to improve drainage where needed.
