All-male asparagus 'backlim' is an rhs award of garden merit variety that produces thick, smooth, straight spears with firm tips and excellent flavour. A reliable mid-to-late season cropper popular with commercial and home growers, it has good disease resistance and grows to about 50-100 cm tall. Plant in full sun in sandy or well-drained soil, in garden beds or containers. To produce white spears, use crowns at least two years old and mound earth over the plants in autumn so the white spears form below the surface and are ready to harvest when shoots appear in spring (harvest season may–june).
