Marshalls garden amaranthus 'velvet curtains' is a striking half-hardy annual with dramatic red-purple foliage and tall crimson flower plumes, awarded the rhs award of garden merit. Grows to about 120 cm tall with a 40 cm spread and produces long-lasting flowerheads that make excellent cut flowers. Sow indoors in pre-watered compost at around 20°c, cover lightly and pot on before planting out after all risk of frost, or sow outdoors 1/2 cm deep and thin to 40 cm apart.
