Compact evergreen alpine producing deep-pink pompom flowers on slender stems above grasslike foliage, often flowering in the first year. Reaches about 15 cm and is ideal for pots, rockeries, raised beds and coastal gardens. Sow indoors: soak seeds a few hours, sow in pre-watered compost, cover lightly, keep out of direct sun at about 20°c; germinates in 2–4 weeks. Move to a cooler spot after germination and transplant when sturdy. Plant out in full sun in well-drained soil, deadhead to prolong flowering and remove dead foliage in spring.
