It belongs to the grape family (vitaceae) and is renowned for its ability to scale walls, fences, and trees using small adhesive tendrils tipped with discs. This fast-growing plant is often used for covering unsightly structures, providing both ornamental beauty and wildlife benefits. Its five-lobed leaves emerge green in spring and summer, turning brilliant shades of red and purple in autumn, making it a popular choice for seasonal interest. In summer, greenish, nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other pollinators, and are followed in autumn by small clusters of dark blue berries, which are an important food source for birds, though they are toxic if eaten by humans.
