Royal-blue iris reticulata are one of the first flowers to bloom in the garden and are a welcome sign of spring. The classic iris has been much admired over the years - painted by artists and used widely in symbolism. Iris reticulata grow to a dainty 15cm, making them perfect for table-top spring pots, or rockery gardens where their beauty and perfume can be enjoyed more closely. Intricately marked petals, in rich shades of blue with saffron yellow splashes will relay the news, "spring is here!" - for Iris was the Greek goddess of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. Plant your bulbs in autumn, 10cm deep in moist, well-drained soil. Add plenty of drainage to the planting hole and a layer of grit on top to protect the new shoots from hungry slugs and snails. Iris reticulata prefer a sheltered spot in partial shade where their exquisite flowers will last longest. Beautiful when planted as the final layer in a spring bulb lasagne where the delicate-looking but tough blooms will form the early flowering lower storey, often emerging from a layer of snow.
