Native to moist woodlands throughout the uk, dryopteris filix-mas is a beautiful, feathery fern with a distinctive upright, shuttlecock-like shape. Fronds are bright green, going on to develop warm, coppery hues in autumn. This dryopteris is almost guaranteed to thrive in any uk garden, for the obvious reason of being well-suited to the climate, as well as being tolerant of a vast range of soil conditions. If there is a difficult, shady spot where little else will grow (perhaps beneath a hedge, or in the rain shadow of a wall), dryopteris filix-mas is likely to give life there a good go. Of course, it can also romp away in easier conditions, looking particularly impressive grown alongside other types of ferns and shade-loving perennials. Prefers moist, humus-rich soil in partial to dappled shade, with shelter from strong winds. H&s: 1m x 1m. This deciduous perennial is fully hardy to -20°c and beyond. Supplied in 2L pots.
