A lovely clematis with double dusky-magenta rosette shaped flowers. Clematis viticella 'purpurea plena elegans' is a wonderful sight when in full bloom as masses of blooms cover the plant. An excellent cut flower that last well in a vase, bringing a naturalistic effect to your floral bouquets. Growing to about 2.5m in height this is a great clematis to grow over a pergola, arch or trellis and ideal for growing through a tree. Thriving in full sun or partial shade in any moist but well drained soil except acidic soil. Plant with the crown below soil level to encourage new shoots, keep the roots and base of the plants shaded by other plants or a layer of pebbles. Clematis viticella 'purpurea plena elegans' is a vigorous, late-flowering viticella-type and makes an excellent partner for a climbing rose. An old variety that holds an award of garden merit from the rhs awarded for outstanding performance in the garden.
